Don’t panic. Keep calm. It shouldn’t be that hard to cater for them.
The easiest thing to serve is meat or fish and salad.
Meat should be plain with no sugar based seasoning. Think of a BBQ. Yes even most sausages should be fine (just find ones which have less than 4 grams of carbohydrates per serving). For flavor and seasoning salt, pepper, garlic, herbs and spices are fine. Cook it with butter on the grill or fry it up.
A roast is perfect.
Just don’t expect your guest to eat the roast veges. Leafy greens are what is better.
Don’t cover the meat or fish in sauces or gravy. If it’s part of the recipe serve it on the side. And that includes ketchup and BBQ sauce. Unfortunately they tend to be loaded with carbohydrates and sugars.
The salad should be leafy greens and can also include egg, bacon, cucumber, tomato, avocado, cheese such as feta or blue cheese, olives, seeds and nuts. The salad dressing can be olive oil, vinegar and salt or even mayonnaise or other dressing. Just check the dressing ingredients before hand. Again best to leave the dressing on the side for your guest to add themselves.
Don’t add “healthy” grains or fruit. No quinoa, no dried cranberries, no croutons, no corn. Your keto guest/s may find these additional items hard to pick out.
Oh no – Dessert!
Don’t stress. The simplest keto dessert is berries and cream. Get a small handful of berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries are fine) and a can or tub of ready whipped cream or tub of whipped cream cheese. Just check the back of the container. You are looking for less than 2g of carbohydrates per serving. Ideally look at the ingredients and make sure sugar is not included. Get the full fat version. (Lite versions usually have sugar to improve the flavor!). You can always whip your own cream too! We also like full fat Greek style yogurt. Add nuts and cacao nibs for extra crunch.
The best nuts are macadamia nuts, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds and even peanuts (yes I know it’s not a nut – it’s a legume).
So don’t stress. Avoid the rice, pasta and potatoes. Don’t order pizza. Keep calm and keto on.
